Sergio Ramos kicked off his Liga MX career in style as Monterrey secured a confident 3-1 win over Atlético San Luis in the Clausura tournament last night. The 38-year-old Spanish legend, donning the captain’s armband in his debut for Los Rayados, made an instant impression on and off the ball nearly scoring twice and leading the backline with his signature presence.
Ramos came close to opening the scoring in the 13th minute with a powerful header that skimmed just wide. Monterrey didn’t wait long, though. Sergio Berterame broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, converting a sharp pass from Oliver Torres. Just ten minutes later, Torres himself doubled the advantage with a clinical finish, sending the Estadio BBVA crowd into celebration.
The veteran defender had another golden opportunity to score before halftime but narrowly missed a Berterame assist in front of goal. Berterame would eventually seal the win with a second goal in the 78th minute, just before Ramos was subbed off to thunderous applause from the home fans.
San Luis pulled one back through Vitor Ferreira in the dying moments, but Monterrey’s dominance was never in question. With the victory, Monterrey climbs to 8th in the Clausura standings, while San Luis drops further to 17th.
Ramos' debut signals a promising new chapter for Monterrey and Liga MX fans will surely be watching closely.
